Periodontal Therapy:
Helping Painful and Swollen Gums in Brantford

Are you experiencing red, tender, or swollen gums? If so, our Brantford office can help. At Portway Dentistry, our team works to combat the negative effects of gum disease. Whether you are suffering from major symptoms like receding gums and shifting teeth or smaller problems like bad breath and red gums, we can help your mouth heal and your smile shine.

Common Symptoms

Is there constant plaque buildup in your mouth? Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? You may be in the beginning stages of gingivitis, also known as gum disease. If left untreated, gingivitis advances to periodontitis, potentially causing tooth loss. To avoid the damaging effects of gingivitis and periodontitis, pay attention to these common symptoms:

  • Swollen, red or tender gums
  • Receding gums
  • Gums that regularly bleed (usually after brushing)
  • Loose, shifting teeth
  • Changes in bite
  • Deep pockets between teeth and gums

Fortunately, our periodontal therapy treats the early stages of periodontal disease with root planing and scaling. If you’re not experiencing these symptoms, it is still important to maintain regular check ups to prevent them!

Our Services

During your checkup, we will examine your gums for periodontal disease. Once we measure the depth of spaces between your gums and teeth using a periodontal probe, we can determine whether or not you have periodontal disease. We use a standard protocol to determine the health status of your gums. If the sulcus (the shallow, V-shaped groove between the tooth and gums) is deeper than three millimeters, you probably have some form of gum disease. If you’re diagnosed, our Portway Dentistry team will set up a treatment plan to get your mouth back on track. Without periodontal therapy, gum disease progresses and begins to destroy gum tissue and bones.
